Speaker predicts Democrats will impeach Trump ‘on the first day’ if they win the House
House Speaker Mike Johnson has warned that Democrats would move quickly to impeach President Donald Trump if they take control of the chamber in next month’s midterm elections.
Speaking Tuesday in an interview with pro-Trump pundit Scott Jennings, Johnson said the move was inevitable, The Hill reported.
“It’s guaranteed, probably on the first day — first or second day,” Johnson said. “Remember, they’ve already filed articles of impeachment in this Congress. And they’re raring to go.”
Many handicappers now favour Democrats to win the House majority. Polls show Trump’s policies are widely unpopular, but far fewer voters back his removal.
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has kept his options open. “We haven’t ruled anything out when it comes to all of the tools available to us to hold people accountable, and we haven’t ruled anything in,” he told reporters last month.
Caucus chairman Pete Aguilar dismissed the talk as a Republican scare tactic.
Last month, 147 Democrats backed an impeachment resolution forced by Rep. Al Green, while party leaders voted “present.”
Johnson insisted Republicans would keep the House. “This is not going to happen,” he told Jennings.
