Gerry Cardinale: Serie A ‘used to be the Premier League’ and must urgently innovate
AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale has called for urgent innovation in Serie A, arguing that Italian football must change if it is to close the gap with the Premier League, according to Football Italia. Speaking to Il Sole 24 Ore, Cardinale compared Serie A’s challenges with Hollywood’s struggle to adapt to technological disruption.
“Serie A used to be the Premier League. Milan were at the top. What happened?” he said. The RedBird founder believes Italian football has enormous untapped potential but must improve its appeal to international audiences and broadcasters. Cardinale also stressed that resistance to change cannot continue, insisting he wants to help drive reform.
