Pentagon confirms Fort Hood shooter’s firing squad execution will be livestreamed
The Pentagon has said the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed, a revelation about plans for the first military execution in more than 65 years.
The Army announced this week that the execution would take place at Fort Hood on Dec. 3. Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 others in the 2009 shooting at the base.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had earlier told Real America’s Voice, “We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public.” Pentagon officials clarified on Thursday that it would be livestreamed, with more details to follow, The Associated Press reports.
Experts offered mixed reactions. Fordham law professor Deborah Denno said it could make the process “much more transparent.” UC Berkeley’s Elisabeth Semel, however, questioned the government’s motivation, saying, “This is a president who’s about spectacle and that’s, I think, precisely the message that he intends to deliver.”
Hasan could file a habeas petition in civilian court, which experts say could significantly delay the execution.
