Ghana denies FBI led cybercrime raid, insists operation was locally coordinated
Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has rejected claims by United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kashyap Patel that his agency led an operation against a cybercrime compound in Ghana.
According to SaharaReporters, the authority clarified on Friday that the operation was planned and executed by Ghanaian agencies with international support.
Patel had claimed the FBI “took out a Scam compound in Ghana” during its global crackdown on cybercrime.
However, the CSA insisted that Ghanaian authorities coordinated the operation.
“The Authority rejects any portrayal of the operation as independently conceived, commanded or executed by the FBI,” it stated.
The operation reportedly resulted in eight arrests and the rescue of 120 suspected trafficking victims, mostly Nigerians.
Investigators also seized 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, vehicles and other equipment.
The authority acknowledged assistance from the FBI, Britain’s National Crime Agency and Nigeria’s EFCC but urged accurate recognition of Ghana’s leadership in the operation.
