Onugkha questions Super Eagles’ mentality after 2026 World Cup failure
Russian-born Nigerian striker German Onugkha has questioned the Super Eagles’ mentality following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, claiming the team had sufficient quality to reach the tournament.
According to All Nigeria Soccer, the Rodina Moscow forward suggested that a lack of motivation contributed to Nigeria’s disappointing campaign. “It’s impossible not to qualify for the World Cup” with such a talented squad, Onugkha argued, adding that some players appeared unwilling to make the sacrifices required.
Nigeria’s qualification hopes ended with a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the African playoff final, denying the three-time African champions a place in the intercontinental playoffs. Onugkha, who has Nigerian heritage, previously declined a call-up to Russia’s national team in 2024.
