Pepe takes up new role at Portuguese Football Federation
Former Portugal defender Pepe has joined the board of the Portuguese Football Federation’s foundation, beginning a new chapter in football administration following his retirement in August 2024. According to GOAL.com, the 41-year-old retired after a distinguished career spanning more than two decades, having represented Portugal and several leading European clubs.
Pepe’s appointment follows reports linking him with coaching positions at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho and alongside Jorge Jesus with the Portugal national team. Neither opportunity materialised. The former centre-back enjoyed a successful spell at Real Madrid between 2007 and 2017, making 334 official appearances and winning 14 trophies, including three UEFA Champions League titles and three LaLiga crowns.
Internationally, Pepe played a key role in Portugal’s historic Euro 2016 triumph, their first major international title. He continued representing his country until Euro 2024, becoming the oldest player to feature at a European Championship finals match, aged 41 years and 130 days, against France in the quarter-finals. His latest appointment keeps him involved in Portuguese football beyond his playing career.
