Mike Johnson says he’ll stay as GOP leader even if Republicans lose House
WASHINGTON – House Speaker Mike Johnson says he intends to remain GOP leader if Republicans lose their House majority in November, though he remains confident about the party’s chances.
“In the unlikely scenario where we lost the majority, I would expect my colleagues would ask me to continue leading this conference, even if we have divided government,” Johnson told CBS News‘ Robert Costa in an interview near Shreveport, Louisiana.
He dismissed speculation that he could retire, saying his earlier remark about starting a lawn business was “tongue in cheek.”
Johnson said he plans to visit 40 districts in 22 states before Election Day. Pressed on whether he could be a combative minority leader, he cited his past as a litigator.
“We can be tough, but we can be happy warriors,” he said.
“I intend to stay and lead,” Johnson added.
