Smoking becomes trendy as researchers believe AI will cure cancer…
Some artificial intelligence researchers have reportedly started smoking cigarettes because they believe AI will eventually cure cancer, according to Palantir Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar.
According to Business Insider, Sankar made the claim during an interview on CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sunday.
“So many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI,” he said.
“I believe so much in AI that it’s going to cure cancer. So I’m showing you my chips are all in.”
However, Sankar provided no evidence or names to substantiate his claims.
He criticised what he described as Silicon Valley’s “mass psychosis” and “social delusion” surrounding artificial intelligence.
Sankar also accused some technology developers of treating artificial general intelligence as a “machine god.”
Despite advances in medical research, AI has not cured cancer, while smoking remains a major cause of preventable disease and death worldwide.1
