Top Republicans privately admit House majority is all but lost
Some top congressional Republicans have privately concluded that keeping control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections is likely impossible, POLITICO reported. Five senior Republican lawmakers, granted anonymity to speak candidly, told the outlet the chamber had all but slipped away, and the focus is now on limiting the scale of defeat and salvaging the Senate majority.
The Congressional Leadership Fund, the top House Republican super PAC, has cancelled advertising in Nebraska and Iowa to redirect money, allowing the Senate Leadership Fund to claim the airtime. Republicans have also pulled back from districts held by Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Tom Kean Jr. A third Republican lawmaker said: “These are not the moves of a party that’s going to keep the House.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee and CLF said they would not give up on the House. White House spokeswoman Liz Huston also said Trump remained “committed to maintaining Republican majorities in both the House and Senate.”
