Could Arsène Wenger challenge Gianni Infantino for FIFA presidency?
Senior figures within European football are considering former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger as a surprise candidate to run against Gianni Infantino for the FIFA presidency, according to a report by BBC Sport. The proposal comes amid growing unrest following Infantino’s controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) scheme, which faced widespread backlash and calls for his resignation from football leaders across Europe, North America, and Asia.
Despite the opposition, Infantino remains the frontrunner for re-election to a fourth term due to strong backing in Africa, South America, and Oceania. Wenger, who has served as FIFA’s head of global football development since 2019, is viewed by supporters as a globally respected figure capable of bridging divisions.
Backers highlight his extensive administrative experience, clean reputation, and deep popularity in regions like Asia and Africa, where he recently advocated for expanding opportunities for non-European nations.
However, Wenger distance himself from Infantino’s recent commercial plots, stating he was not involved in the FFE project and emphasizing the need for an independent FIFA operating with integrity. It remains uncertain whether the 76-year-old Frenchman would run against the man who appointed him.
Candidates must declare their intention by November 18 and secure nominations from at least five national associations to enter the race.
