Senate President Godswill Akpabio has claimed that more than 70 per cent of terrorists responsible for destabilising Nigeria’s security are foreign nationals.

According to Premium Times, Akpabio made the claim during Thursday’s Senate plenary while responding to criticism of his position on legislation seeking to decriminalise attempted suicide.

“So people who are misinterpreting what we discuss here, I just want them to know that most of those people, more than 70 per cent, are not Nigerians, those who are destabilising the security of this country. You need to know that,” he said.

Akpabio rejected allegations of religious bias, insisting that terrorism should not be associated with Islam or Christianity.

He maintained that both religions prohibit suicide and killing, arguing that suicide bombers should not be identified with any faith.

The Senate president also defended his position on punishing attempted suicide, saying lawmakers must distinguish between people experiencing mental health challenges and those deliberately attempting suicide while mentally sound.

He described the criticism as politically motivated.
