Five killed as tanker crushes commercial vehicles in Oyo
Five persons have been killed after a fully loaded 45,000-litre diesel tanker crushed vehicles at Aduloju, along the Ojoo-Iwo Road expressway, in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State on Saturday, Punch reports.
The victims, two males and three females, reportedly died on the spot. The accident involved the tanker, an unregistered car and four commercial vehicles popularly known as Micra cars.
An eyewitness, Sukurat Babajide, said one of the affected vehicles had overtaken the commercial vehicle she was travelling in less than five minutes before the crash.
“One of the affected vehicles just overtook our car not up to five minutes when the incident happened. I was in another commercial vehicle. It was just like watching movies. When we got to that spot, five people had already been laid on the ground. They were two males and three females,” she said.
Another eyewitness, Kemi Oguntoyinbo, confirmed that five people died at the scene but said she could not give further details.
The state Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kehinde Dahunsi, confirmed the incident and said the tanker suffered brake failure before crashing into the commercial vehicles.
“The trailer actually failed brake and went and crushed the commercial vehicles popularly called Micra that was carrying passengers and five people died on the spot. Those passengers were nine in number,” he said.
He added that the remaining passengers were rescued and the corpses are with the police.
