US Embassy issues health alert to Americans in Nigeria over Ebola case
The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a health alert to Americans in Nigeria after the country reported a case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola, on October 20, 2026.
In the alert published on October 21, the US Mission Nigeria said health officials were conducting contact tracing. The Nigerian Ministry of Health said the affected individual had travelled by air from Uganda, Vanguard reports.
The embassy described Ebola as a serious health concern, stating that “Ebola is a rare, severe, and often fatal hemorrhagic fever illness.”
It urged travellers to consult guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and advised those at risk who develop symptoms to alert their healthcare providers before presenting for medical care.
Travellers were also told to continue taking malaria preventive medication, as its symptoms can resemble Ebola’s, and to monitor their health for 21 days after returning from outbreak areas.
