Mystery creature caught on camera near US-Mexico border sparks fear, alien theories, and official skepticism
Images of an unidentified creature captured on surveillance and camera-trap footage near the US-Mexico border have stirred fear and debate after Mexican UFO investigator Jaime Maussan suggested it could be an unknown predator, according to The US Sun and The Times of India.
What the footage shows
The Sun describes a hairless animal in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, with unusually long limbs, a rounded head, elongated fingers and a tail, seen climbing walls and moving on all fours. The Times of India describes a large, pale animal with prominent limbs and a long tail, in the Valley of Juárez along the Rio Grande. Four research assistants working with Maussan estimated it at nearly six feet long, including a three-foot tail, based on footage of it climbing a brick wall. The cameras did not capture it walking upright.
The claims
Residents have reportedly linked the animal to attacks on chickens, roosters and rabbits. One young boy said he saw it grab a chicken by the head and flee up a tree. Maussan, who has gathered eyewitness accounts and trail-camera photos, called it agile and intelligent, said it does not resemble any known species, and claimed some frightened residents have left their homes.
“It’s a predator. I’m not saying it’s extraterrestrial, but it is something scary,” he told local media. He also floated an interdimensional theory, asking: “Why did it appear there? It’s a mystery.”
Skepticism
Sergio Rodríguez, director of civil protection in Ciudad Juárez, said his department had received no reports confirming the creature’s existence. No biological evidence has emerged to verify the attacks or identify the animal. Residents have compared it to the chupacabra of local folklore, while others have suggested a mutated or unidentified species.
Maussan has faced scrutiny over unverified claims, including purported “non-human” mummies he presented to Mexico’s Congress in 2023. US authorities say no physical evidence of alien life exists.
Investigators say further examination is needed to establish what the footage shows.
