FIFA investigates alleged racism as England-Ireland U15 match is abandoned
FIFA has launched an investigation after England’s Under-15 team refused to continue their World Cup and Festival match against the Republic of Ireland following an allegation of racism.
According to BBC Sport, the Group C encounter in Baku, Azerbaijan, was abandoned on Monday after an England player reported an alleged racist slur by an Irish opponent. The incident occurred in the final minute, following an altercation between players, with the Republic of Ireland leading 4-1.
England head coach Matt Thorpe and his coaching staff informed the referee of the allegation before withdrawing their players from the pitch. A FIFA spokesperson said: “The official reports are being gathered, and the matter will be referred to the independent disciplinary committee, who will decide in due course.”
The Football Association said it was awaiting further information and was in contact with FIFA, stressing that players’ wellbeing remained a priority. The Football Association of Ireland has also been contacted for comment as investigations continue.
