AI-generated pop singer announces pregnancy, quits band as fans express shock
An artificial intelligence-generated Chinese pop group has sparked widespread confusion after one of its virtual singers announced she was pregnant and taking maternity leave.
The singer, Mity, a member of BABYQUEEN, revealed her supposed pregnancy on social media, leaving fans stunned, particularly those unaware that the group was entirely fictional.
According to Daily Mail, the announcement was made in October 2026 and quickly attracted attention across Chinese social media platforms.
“Recently, I found out that I’m pregnant,” Mity announced.
“After thinking about it for a long time and talking things over with the company and my members, I’ve decided to take a break from the team for now to focus on resting and taking care of myself.”
However, the pregnancy was fictional, as Mity and her bandmates exist only as AI-generated characters.
The creators, reportedly students passionate about K-pop, subsequently admitted that they invented the pregnancy storyline because managing multiple virtual personalities had become overwhelming.
The revelation generated mixed reactions, with some users expressing amusement while others criticised the creators for trivialising pregnancy.
The controversy comes amid the growing popularity of AI-generated entertainers across Asia.
In China, virtual characters have increasingly appeared in advertising campaigns, attracting commercial partnerships.
One such character, Fang Taozi, reportedly appeared in contact lens advertisements after gaining popularity through an AI-generated drama series.
Another fictional character, Xiaohai, became the subject of online controversy after appearing in promotional content.
The incidents have raised questions about transparency, consumer trust and the increasingly blurred boundaries between artificial intelligence and entertainment.
