Nearly nine in 10 Nigerian adults now support action to reduce methane emissions, up from 72 per cent in 2024, The PUNCH reports, citing a new international survey.

The poll, commissioned by the Global Methane Hub with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, found 89 per cent support, a 17-percentage-point rise.

It covered Nigeria and 17 other countries across four continents.

Poor water quality topped respondents’ concerns at 67 per cent, followed by flooding and access to drinking water at 60 per cent each.

Some 57 per cent named oil and gas companies among the top three contributors to climate change.

“As flooding and water challenges put greater pressure on communities across Nigeria, the case for tackling methane is becoming increasingly clear,” said Global Methane Hub CEO Marcelo Mena.

Tengi George-Ikoli, Nigeria Country Manager of the Natural Resource Governance Institute, said: “Nigerians are right to be concerned about methane emissions and the harm they cause to health, environments and livelihoods.”
