Former FIFA Governance Chief claims Infantino ineligible for fourth term under statutes
Gianni Infantino is ineligible to run for a fourth term as FIFA president under the organization’s own statutes, former FIFA governance committee head Miguel Maduro told reporters, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
Maduro cited Article 33, paragraph two of the FIFA statutes, stating: “Article 33, paragraph two of the FIFA statutes is very clear when it says no person may serve as president for more than three terms.”
He added, “Gianni Infantino has been elected three times, he’s been president of FIFA for three terms. So in my view, there’s no way to reconcile another presidency of Infantino.”
Infantino argues his initial 2016–2019 term was incomplete following Sepp Blatter’s resignation. However, Maduro noted, “The text of the provision is clear… It makes no distinction on whether these terms are complete terms or incomplete terms.”
Human rights group FairSquare has also urged member associations to declare Infantino ineligible ahead of the March 2027 election.
