Police arrest hundreds in Kenya as anti-government protests turn violent

Police say protests were co-opted by ‘suspects’ engaging in ‘criminal activities’.

Over 270 Arrests: Kenyan police arrested more than 270 people suspected of using anti-government rallies as a cover for criminal activities like robbery, stealing, and property damage.

Violence and Protests: Riot police clashed with protesters, using tear gas and force, resulting in 39 deaths and 361 injuries over two weeks of rallies, with the worst violence occurring in Nairobi on June 25.

Government Response: Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki condemned the protests as an “orgy of violence” and promised action against those engaging in criminal behavior, while President William Ruto denied responsibility for the violence and called for dialogue.

Despite the government’s response, protesters plan to continue demonstrating on Thursday and Sunday, driven by anger and feeling that their voices are not being heard.
