Kenya President reverses controversial pay rise for government officials amid protests

It was reported on Tuesday that Mr Ruto’s ministers and Kenyan members of parliament received a pay rise effective July 1.

Amidst public outcry and nationwide protests, President William Ruto has directed his ministers and lawmakers to forfeit their recent pay rise, ordering a review of their salaries.

The President’s directive comes after reports of a pay increase for ministers and lawmakers, which coincided with protests against a tax hike, resulting in 39 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

The pay rise, which was implemented on July 1, would have seen cabinet members and lawmakers receive significant salary bumps, but will now be suspended pending review.

President Ruto has emphasized the need for the Executive and all arms of government to live within their means, amidst criticisms of the pay rise and the government’s handling of the economy.
