ECOWAS Finance Ministers, Central Bank governors meet to actualise single currency

Officials gathered in Abuja to discuss the launch of a single regional currency, the ECO, to drive economic growth and integration across West Africa.

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, expressed the country’s full commitment to the ECO, highlighting its potential to improve economic growth and development in the region.

The meeting focused on detailed preparations for the introduction of the ECO, aiming to lay a robust groundwork for a smooth transition to a single currency system among the 15 ECOWAS member states.

The single currency seeks to simplify monetary transactions, streamline trade, and enhance monetary stability, making it easier for countries to engage in cross-border commerce and investment, and paving the way for a more prosperous future for all member states.
