Four soldiers were feared dead while two others sustained bullet injuries on Monday in Abua in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State when unknown gunmen attacked a motorcade conveying oil workers to Omelema in the same local government area.

The killing is coming barely 24 hours after gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), attacked security checkpoints in Omagwa and Isiokpo communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, which led to the death of scores of security personnel, including soldiers, police and customs officers.

Our reporter learnt that the gunmen attacked the soldiers who were guarding staff of an oil company operating in Omelema community on Monday morning before abducting the oil workers.

Details surrounding the attack were still sketchy as of press time but residents of the community said the gunmen ambushed the company’s vehicle conveying the staff of the company to a fuel station in the community.

Efforts made to talk with the Public Relation Officer of 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Major Charles Ekeocha, proved abortive as he did not respond to the text message sent to him on the issue.

When contacted, Rivers State Police Command’s Public Relation Officer, Nnmadi Omoni, said that he is aware of the incident but had no details.
