El Chapo's drug lord son Ovidio Guzmán arrested in dramatic city-wide shootout

News emerging from Mexico City suggests the arrest followed a massive shootout, with roads blocked off by burning cars as Guzmán’s bodyguards faced off against heavily-armed police.

Ovidio Guzmán, son of notorious drug lord Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, better known as “El Chapo,” has been arrested on suspicion of drug-related charges in a dramatic police operation in Mexico City.

Guzmán, 32, had been identified as a major figure in the illegal supply of fentanyl and is said to have taken a top role in the Sinaloa cartel following his father’s capture.

The US State Department claims that Guzmán and his brother, Joaquín, are currently overseeing approximately eleven methamphetamine labs in the state of Sinaloa, producing up to 5000lb of the drug per month.

Juan de Dios Gamez, the city’s mayor, confirmed on Twitter that federal armed forces have been carrying out an operation in Culiacán since dawn on Thursday and that this has sparked violence across the state.

“We ask the citizens of Culiacán not to leave home due to the blockades that have occurred in different parts of the city,” he wrote…
