Uchenna Eziekwe, 28, and his wife Chineye, 22, were arrested at Isolo General Hospital in Lagos for attempting to sell their 2-year-old son to fund Uchenna’s relocation to Canada.
The couple was caught on July 9, 2024, after a tip-off to the police, and they confessed to planning to sell their child due to economic hardship.
Uchenna, a laborer, claimed he convinced his unemployed wife to sell their son, saying they had no other choice but to give him up to someone who could care for him.
The police rescued the child and are still investigating the incident, which highlights the desperation and tough times faced by some families in Nigeria.
