Liverpool could miss out on the Champions League – even if they finish fourth

Liverpool could sneak into the Champions League spots this season – and still not be invited to Europe’s premier banquet.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have underperformed this campaign, but a late-season revival could see the Reds still secure European football. However, a spot in the Champions League could be denied to Liverpool based on Chelsea and Manchester United’s results in Europe this season.

Chelsea are still in the hunt for the Champions League trophy, While the Red Devils could also taste European success in the Europa League. UEFA rules state that one country can’t have more than five teams in the Champions League.

And should both Chelsea and United win their respective European titles, they would both qualify for the Champions League.

However – including the top four, providing United and Chelsea finish outside of it – there would then be six sides in the Champions League – meaning one side would have to drop down to the Europa League. That side would be the team that finished in fourth place.
