Tottenham are on the lookout for a new boss after dismissing Antonio Conte on Sunday. The Italian was axed less than 18 months into his Spurs tenure amid a series of underwhelming performances and an indifferent run of results. Tottenham have been tipped to return for Mauricio Pochettino, who spent just over five years in charge of the club. And Harry Kane’s comments following his former mentor’s departure in 2019 speak volumes as the Lilywhites assess their options.
Kane became one of the deadliest strikers in the Premier League under Pochettino as Tottenham secured four consecutive top-four finishes under the Argentine. Pochettino also led Spurs to the Champions League final just months before his exit as he built a formidable team in north London.
“Gaffer. I’ll be forever thankful to you for helping me achieve my dreams,” Kane wrote on social media after Pochettino had been sacked by Tottenham in November 2019.
“We’ve had some amazing moments in the last 5 and a half years that I will never forget. You were my manager but my friend as well and I thank you for that relationship. Good luck with your next chapter!”
Kane is Tottenham’s star player and has bagged goal after goal for the team over the years. And his influence at the club can’t be underestimated. The 29-year-old has just one more year remaining on his current deal, with Spurs keen to tie him down to a new contract. So if he is vocal about bringing Pochettino back to the club, the Board may well sit up and listen in an attempt to convince the player to stay at the club.
Pochettino has been out of work since last summer after being dismissed by Paris Saint-Germain. The 51-year-old had led the Parisians to the Ligue 1 title weeks earlier but was given his marching orders following his failure to take the team beyond the last 16 of the Champions League. And a comment he made last year amid his links to Manchester United shows that he could be open to managing Tottenham for a second time.
