Everton will begin the season under the shadow of a potential additional points deduction.
The Premier League alleges that Everton exceeded the PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Regulations) by an extra £6.5 million for the 2022-23 season. This adds to the £16 million overspend, for which they were previously penalized with a points deduction, linked to interest payments for their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.
In April, an independent commission docked Everton two points for their 2022-23 overspend. This followed a ten-point deduction in November for breaches in the 2021-22 season, which was later reduced to six points on appeal.
However, the Premier League claims that the breach for the 2022-23 season is significantly higher, as the interest payments tied to the stadium were excluded. The independent commission, which imposed the second points deduction, dismissed the Premier League’s argument that £17 million in interest payments should be included in their losses.
Nevertheless, the commission will re-examine £6.5 million in payments, which could constitute another breach. SunSport has learned that the commission has yet to inform Everton or the League when a decision will be made, despite both parties seeking a prompt resolution.
The Premier League contends that the disputed £6.5 million should be added to the club’s expenses, as it was used for day-to-day operational costs.
