Apple TV plus becomes first streamer to win best picture at the Oscars

Apple TV+ has made history as the first streaming service to take home an Oscarfor Best Picture with its coming-of-age comedy-drama CODA. The film follows Ruby Rossi, played by Emilia Jones, who navigates the world as the only hearing member in a deaf family and attempts to establish a life for herself outside of her home.

Additionally, CODA‘s Troy Kotsure won Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Deaf actor to win an Oscar since his co-star Marlee Matlin took home Best Actress for her role in Children of a Lesser God in 1986, and writer-director Siân Heder took home Best Adapted Screenplay.

Apple CEO Tim Cook took to Twitter to share the news, writing, “Team CODA created a profoundly beautiful movie, a story of hope and heart that celebrates our differences.”

Several streaming services have previously been nominated for the highly-esteemed category, though none have ever taken home the trophy. Amazon was the first streamer to receive a nomination in the category with Manchester by the Sea in 2017, though Moonlight won the award that year…
