FG launches investigation into sale of NIN data leak

The Federal Government has launched an investigation into the alleged unauthorized sale of National Identification Numbers (NIN) and personal data of Nigerians online.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has confirmed discussions with the Minister of Interior to address the issue and expressed confidence in the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) commitment to safeguarding national identity data.

Paradigm Initiative, a civil society organization, raised the alarm after discovering instances of NINs, BVNs, and personal information being sold online, allegedly sourced directly from government databases.

NIMC has denied any security breaches in its database, emphasizing its implementation of robust cybersecurity measures to protect Nigeria’s national identity database, and warned Nigerians against sharing their data with fraudulent websites.
