N70,000 Minimum Wage: Labour Union accepts Tinubu’s Proposal

N70,000 Minimum Wage: Labour Union accepts Tinubu’s Proposal

In a significant development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accepted the proposal of N70,000 as the new national minimum wage, as announced by President Bola Tinubu. The decision was made after a meeting between the President and the leadership of the Organised Labour in Abuja on Thursday.

According to NLC President Joe Ajaero, the union agreed to the offer due to the attachment of other incentives and the President’s promise to review the minimum wage every three years. This marks a departure from the previous arrangement, where reviews were not regularly conducted.

The new minimum wage, which is expected to replace the expired N30,000 minimum wage, will be subject to approval by the National Assembly. President Tinubu has also pledged to support the private sector and sub-nationals in implementing the new wage.

In a statement, Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga revealed that the President had announced the decisions during the meeting, which was the second in seven days. The Labour leaders reportedly applauded President Tinubu for his “fatherly gesture.”

Furthermore, the President has promised to use his discretionary powers to address the demands of university unions regarding unpaid salaries.
