EU says Apple violated the DMA and faces a $38 billion fine

The European Union announced that Apple is violating its DMA rules, with the iPhone maker facing a potential fine of 10% of annual revenue.

The European Commission (EC) has officially launched an investigation into Apple’s compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), following rumors of a potential probe.

The EC believes Apple’s new App Store rules for the European market violate the DMA, preventing app developers from directing consumers to alternative channels for offers and content.

The EC is also investigating Apple’s new contract terms for developers, specifically the Core Technology Fee (CTF), which may be in breach of the DMA.

The EC alleges that Apple still doesn’t allow developers to inform customers about cheaper purchasing options outside the App Store, and makes it difficult for them to steer customers towards those offers.
