Nigerian student in UK collapses, dies at workplace

A GoFundMe account has been set up in the United Kingdom by the relative of a Nigerian student who slumped and died while waiting to resume work.

Chinonso Ezeonwumere, a student of University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, England, who came into the UK in September 2023, was reported to have slumped and died on the 7th of October, 2024, while waiting to resume his shift for the day.

A relative of the deceased, Christian Daniel-Ebeye, has launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe in a bid to raise cash to support the repatriation of Chinonso’s body to Nigeria and the raiser has been garnering funds to help towards funeral costs.

According to details of the post added on GoFundMe, efforts by medical practitioners, Hatfield Police Station Officers and security officers to resuscitate Chinonso when he slumped, proved abortive as he passed away.

The deceased MSc Management student was the last child of his aged mother and survived by seven older siblings who all reside in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, The Star gathered that the family of the deceased has requested that the body be repatriated to Nigeria immediately for burial after all coronary investigation has been completed, possibly by next week.

The GoFundMe note reads: “My name is Christian, I am raising fund to support the repatriation of the body and funeral of my relative Chinonso Ezeonwumere who like every other Nigerian youth, came into the UK last year September, 2023 for MSc Management at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, England.

“On the 7th October, 2024, Chinonso was reported to have slumped and died at his workplace, while waiting to resume his shift. Efforts made by the Medical Practitioners, Hatfield Police Station Officers and Security Officers on site to resuscitate him, all proved abortive. Chinonso’s hope and dream of a brighter future in the UK was cut short with his sudden demise.

“Chinonso was a jolly good fellow who was loved by everyone. He was the last child of his aged mother and survived by seven older siblings who all reside in Nigeria.”

As at press time, £233 has been raised from the projected £10,000.
