Organised Labour rejects state-by-state minimum wage negotiations

Organised Labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), has rejected the proposal by the Southern Governors’ Forum to decentralize minimum wage negotiations to state governments.

The NLC has condemned the proposal, stating that allowing states to determine their minimum wages would be detrimental to workers’ welfare and undermine the essence of a national minimum wage.

The Southern Governors’ Forum has resolved that states should be allowed to negotiate their minimum wages independently, reflective of the cost of living in each state.

The NLC and TUC are adamant that the minimum wage should be a national issue, not subject to state-by-state negotiations, and have urged President Bola Tinubu to transmit the proposed bill on the new minimum wage to the National Assembly once ready.
