Ahead of 2027: Northern leaders to convene summit on region’s political, economic, and security challenges

Notable leaders from northern Nigeria are coming together for a pivotal summit focused on revitalising the region’s political and economic power, ahead of the 2027 elections.

Prominent leaders from northern Nigeria are set to come together for a crucial summit aimed at revitalizing the region’s political and economic power ahead of the 2027 elections. The League of Northern Democrats, consisting of former governors, senators, and other notable figures from the region, made this announcement in Abuja on Tuesday.

The summit’s primary focus will be addressing the political trajectory, economic growth, and security issues that the northern region faces. This comes after the transition of power to the southern part of the country, following former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year administration.

The recent #Endbadgovernance protest, which swept across northern states and witnessed violence, has been attributed to leadership failure by Vice President Kashim Shettima. In response, he announced a high-level meeting of northern stakeholders, including governors, politicians, business executives, and traditional leaders, to discuss regional issues.

The Protem Chairman of the LND and former governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, emphasized that the summit would serve as a platform to address the challenges in the northern region and create a document detailing solutions to tackle these problems.

Shekarau further stressed that the summit would remain apolitical and focus on the overall progress and societal reorientation in the north. The goal is to produce a document outlining the aspirations of the people and use it as a guiding principle for anyone seeking political support from the region.
