A German man suspected of taking part in three robberies that targeted money transporters has been arrested in the Netherlands.

The 60-year-old, who has not been publicly named, was detained on a European arrest warrant and German prosecutors have launched extradition proceedings.

The suspect is accused of participating in a 2018 robbery in Cologne, as well as heists at Cologne-Bonn airport and in Frankfurt in 2019.

In all three cases, the attackers fled in cars stolen in the Netherlands, set fire to them near the crime scene, and then continued in another car.

Investigators said they were able to identify a vehicle that the perpetrators allegedly used to flee back across the border.

Two guards were injured in the last two attacks and prosecutors said the suspect used a machine gun in the airport robbery.

There had been speculation that the robberies were carried out by former members of the far-left Red Army Faction group but prosecutors said their investigation did not confirm this.
