World’s oldest conjoined twins – from separate bedrooms to coming out as trans

The world’s oldest conjoined twins have passed away at the age of 62.

Lori and George Schappell died of undisclosed causes at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, US, on Sunday (April 7), the Daily Star previously reported. The tragic news comes after were told they would not live past 30 due to their unusual condition.

The twins were born in Reading, Pennsylvania, on September 18, 1961, with partially fused skulls. They shared vital blood vessels and a staggering 30% of their brains.

But that did not stop them leading very different lives. They made headlines when George, formerly Dori, came out as transgender in 2007.

He said: “I have known from a very young age that I should have been a boy. I loved playing with trains and hated girly outfits. I kept my desire to change sex hidden – even from Lori – for many years.”
