N22bn Earned Allowances: FG Pitches NASU, SSANU Against ASUU In Sharing Formula

Daily Independent

Barring any urgent interventions, the four major unions within the university system may soon become polarised, following a lopsided sharing formula allegedly introduced by the Federal Government for them to disburse over N22billion recently approved as Earned Allowances.

Already, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising of Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities NASU and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU have rejected the sharing formula, allegedly stating that it is biased.

In the letter approving the disbursement, it was learnt that out of the N22.127billion, ASUU should be allocated 75%, while the 3 other Non-Teaching Unions make do with only 25% to share among their members.

In a statement forwarded to Daily Independent, Abuja, by Mohammed Ibrahim, National President, SSANU and Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary, NASU respectively, warned of the implications of this alleged lopsided formula.

They noted that this is the 3rd time this lopsided, skewed and unrealistic disbursement is being done to other unions which are not only more in number but belong to 3 different Unions in the Universities across Nigeria.

According to them, this brazen injustice is, to say the least, appalling and inhumane. They reeled out previous disbursements alleging that in the
2nd Tranche – for the Year 2017 N23billion at 89% was allocated to ASUU and 11% went to Non-Teaching Staff Supplementary of N8b later released to Non-Teaching Staff.

Expressing their grievances further, they said during the 3rd Tranche allocation of – The year 2019 – N25billion at the rate of 80% went to ASUU and 20% went to Non-Teaching Staff, while the 4th Tranche – The year 2021 – N40b at 75% also went to ASUU and 25% to Non-Teaching Staff.
