Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government has appealed for more international aid as it struggles to cope with the devastating earthquake in a mountainous eastern region that has left more than 1,000 people dead and many more injured.
The Islamist leadership claimed that as a result of sanctions put in place by western nations following the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces last year, the war-torn country was hampered in its ability to deal with Wednesday’s catastrophe in the provinces of Khost and Paktika.
