B/Haram: Borno has 1.8m out of school children

The Borno State government has said there are 1.8 million out-of-school children in the state, describing it as worrisome.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Abba Wakibe, made this revelation during the opening ceremony for the training of At Risk Children-Programme (ARC-P) of 968 Youth Facilitators’ in Borno State held in Maiduguri yesterday.

He stressed that insurgency had greatly affected the education sector, including the enrollment of children and manpower.

“We have 56,000 orphans and 49,000 widows, but the number of fatherless children still remains unknown. It is our sincere hope that this programme will reduce the number of out-of-school children in Borno,” Wakibe said.

The Coordinator of (ARC-P), Hajiya Inna Galadima, said a total of 968 facilitators had been selected across 27 LGAs of the state for three weeks training to equip them with required skills.

He said the programme would drastically reduce the number of out-of-school children in the state.
