Mete out stringent punishment to drugs traffickers — Peter Obi tells FG

Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate, has called for capital punishment for drug traffickers in Nigeria to combat the growing drug abuse and illicit trafficking menace.

Obi also urged the government to invest in rehabilitating drug abuse victims, stressing the need for a commitment to achieving a drug-free nation.

The Senate had earlier suggested the death penalty as the maximum punishment for drug trafficking, a shift from the previous life imprisonment sentence.

The proposed bill aims to deter traffickers, but some lawmakers have expressed concerns about the death penalty’s irreversible nature and potential for wrongful convictions.
