FG set to release Nnamdi Kanu, AGF keeps mum

The Nigerian government is facing intense pressure to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in custody since June 2021.

Political leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone have increased efforts to secure Kanu’s release, with meetings and open appeals to the government, seeking a political solution to the impasse.

The government has refused to comment on the matter, citing sub judice, but sources indicate that the governors of the five states in the region will soon meet with the president to present their resolution.

Legal experts suggest that a political solution, such as an out-of-court settlement or the president’s intervention, could lead to Kanu’s release, potentially through a ‘nolle prosequi’ or the withdrawal of charges against him.
