Hundreds of United Methodist Church (UMC) members have protested against a faction accused of supporting LGBTQ rights and regionalisation in Gombe State.
The protestors brandished placards rejecting these issues, emphasising their commitment to a unified church and condemning what they see as “unholy acts.”
Daily Nigerian reports that the protest occurred during the Northern and Central Nigeria Annual Conferences in Gondum village, Shongom local government area.
Yohana Wesley, Resident Bishop of Nigeria UMC, stated that the faction was disowned for not following established procedures.
Chipau Kiliyobas, Director of Connectional Ministry for Northern Nigeria UMC Annual Conference, cited disagreements over regionalisation and LGBTQ issues as the cause of the conflict. He noted the majority view LGBTQ acts as unholy.
Bishop John Schol of the U.S. Council of Bishops tried to mediate but faced resistance. He assured that regional decisions on same-sex marriage would be respected without global imposition, but protesters continued to oppose LGBTQ recognition.
