SERAP takes legal action against Tinubu for failing to order NNPCL to reverse ‘illegal’ petrol price increase

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu over the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)’s unlawful petrol price hike and the failure to investigate corruption and mismanagement allegations.

The group is seeking to compel Tinubu to direct the NNPCL to reverse the increase and to direct Fagbemi and anti-corruption agencies to probe the allegations. The lawsuit argues that the increase in petrol prices breaches constitutional guarantees and international human rights obligations, and that it places a disproportionate burden on marginalized and vulnerable sectors of society.

The arbitrary increase jeopardizes their living conditions, physical, emotional, and individual development, and intensifies socioeconomic conditions. The lawsuit also calls for justice and the opportunity to understand why Nigerians continue to pay the price for corruption in the oil sector.
