Kebbi spends N15.5b on out-of-school kids

Kebbi State Governor Abubakar Bagudu said his administration has spent N15.5 billion on education for out-of-school children.

The governor said the N15.5 billion was used in the construction of 552 classroom blocks, bole holes, toilets and furniture for the course of out-of-school children in the state.

Bagudu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government said the state is fully committed to eradicating the out-of-school children phenomenon which he pegged at 900,000.

Also, the Minister of State for Education Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba maintained that the Federal Ministry of Education was determined to ensure that all children of school age who are out of school are returned and retained to complete their basic and secondary education and possibly transit to tertiary institutions.

The minister, who spoke at a national campaign on out-of-school children in Birnin-Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, said no country can make meaningful progress with a high number of its youths as illiterates.

In a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Ben Gong, the minister said the high number of out-of-school children was inimical to the growth and development of any country.
