ATBU student killed trying to retrieve girlfriend’s stolen phone – Police

Bauchi State police have revealed that a 500 level Geology student, Joseph Agbaidu, was stabbed to death while trying to retrieve his girlfriend’s snatched handbag from robbers.

This was disclosed when the leadership of the National Association of Bauchi State students (NUBAS) and the Student Union Government of Abubakar Taafwa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi visited the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi command, Auwal Musa Mohammed, in his office on Wednesday.

The gruesome murder of the 28 year old final year student led to wide protest by students that was quelled by the police and subsequent closure of the University by the management.

According to a press release issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, the student leaders’ visit was e prompted by the incident which occurred on Saturday December 2, 2023.

He said some unknown persons, numbers not ascertained, snatched a handbag containing a mobile phone belonging to the girlfriend of the deceased, Philomena Ahobee, a student of Abubakar Tatari Polytechnic (ATAP) Bauchi.

“Her boyfriend Agbaidu Joseph, of Anguwan Ngas, Bauchi, who was a student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi, tried to help her to retrieve the handbag containing the phone,” Wakil disclosed.

“The assailant(s) stabbed him on the left-side of his chest with a sharp knife.

“The victim was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi for treatment but was certified dead while on admission by a medical doctor”.
