Lagos Government announces plan to demolish shanties and illegal structures in Jakande Estate and Mayegun axis

The Lagos State government has revealed its intention to clear shanties and illegal structures erected around the Jakande Estate and Mayegun axis in Ajah, Lagos.

Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development, made this announcement during a site inspection on Sunday. He expressed concern over the proliferation of shanties and unauthorized structures, which pose a threat to the boundaries of Jakande Estate and nearby roads, setbacks, and drainage alignments, particularly concerning the planned Lagos to Calabar coastal highway project.

Dr. Babatunde urged occupants of the affected shanties and illegal structures to vacate the area immediately, emphasizing that the government would not issue further notices before commencing the removal exercise.

He stated: “Despite several removal notices served on the occupants, they have remained defiant. While some have begun dismantling the illegal structures, I urge those yet to comply to do so promptly, as the demolition of these structures commences today.”

Accompanying Dr. Babatunde on the inspection tour of the Mayegun/Jakande Estate axis was Engr. Sodein, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development.
