CBN increases capital base requirement for mega banks to N500 billion

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has unveiled updated guidelines on bank recapitalization, just 48 hours after reiterating the importance of bolstering Deposit Money Banks’ capital base for enhanced efficiency.

Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Sidi Ali, announced these fresh directives in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja.

Under these new guidelines, banks holding international authorizations must elevate their capital base to N500 billion, while national banks are required to reach N200 billion.

Furthermore, commercial banks operating with national licenses must adhere to a minimum capital threshold of N200 billion, whereas those with regional authorization must maintain a capital floor of N50 billion.
