Nigeria’s 2023 election could affect West Africa sub-region – ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission to Nigeria has said the outcome of the 2023 general election could have effects on the subregion.

The group stated this when it visited the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja on Monday.

The group was led by Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, former Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Director of Political Affairs, ECOWAS Commission, Remi Ajibewa, said the subregional body looks forward to successful and credible elections in West African countries especially Nigeria in 2023 given the leadership role the country played in the sub-region.

“We all know the importance Nigeria holds, given the fact that, as they used to say, if Nigeria sneezes, the whole West Africa catches cold and we don’t pray that will be the result.
