The coal mining community protecting America’s most famous inbred family


Inbred locals who communicate in grunts, a single solitary mansion and a church are the main features of a quiet community in West Virginia.

Odd – around 75 miles from Charleston – is a tiny coal-mining district in Raleigh County that has just 779 people living in the area.

It is an unincorporated community, which means there is no local government or elected officials in the area – which has been described as being like thriller film Deliverance. 

When trying to choose a name for the area, the local community wanted something odd and unique, and so they chose Odd, and it stuck.

Odd hit the headlines after filmmaker Mark Laita shone a spotlight on the heartbreaking story of the Whittaker family – who are protected by neighbors with shotguns.
