Nigeria still asking for deposed Niger President’s release—Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has stated that Nigeria will continue to engage with the government of the Niger Republic to ensure the release of the country’s deposed President, Mohamed Bazoum.

The PUNCH reports that former Nigeria’s Military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), said in August that Bazoum told the delegation of the Economic Community of West African States the challenges he had faced since he was detained by the military junta led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani.

Bazoum has not been released since the junta struck in the West African country in July.

But Tuggar said Nigeria, which plays a critical role in the ECOWAS bloc, won’t relent in pressing for Bazoum’s freedom.

Speaking to Channels Television on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Conference in Dubai, the minister said on Saturday that Nigeria was not under any pressure to act against the Niger Republic.
